Runescape creator Jagex has put a stop to Runelite HD, a fan-made HD mod to the popular free client called Old School Runescape, just when the project was set to go live on Monday. The 11th-hour move has some Runescape users expressing outrage over Jagex's choice and saying that they'll switch to other MMOs.
Runelite HD creator "117" posted on Reddit Tuesday with a message that he received from Jagex and was later acknowledged by Jagex in its own blog article. Runelite HD operates as a plugin that could provide significant visual enhancements to the core Runescape that can be observed by 117's Twitter. Moderator 117 also said that they've spent about two thousand hours in the last two years developing Runelite HD.
"Yesterday we made contact with the developers of known HD projects, and we asked them to stop development of their games, as it's a project we have been actively exploring," Jagex stated. Jagex addressed 117 with the news that it was working on the development of an HD version of Old School Runescape was "still still in the early exploration phases" but "very advanced."
"Naturally this means that any project led by fans that attempts to alter the look of Old School RuneScape appears will be against our ideas," Jagex wrote to 117. "We think it's absolutely vital that there is consistency in the way that Old School looks and we'd like to ensure that our changes to the official version will be the only ones available.
I hope the news regarding the possibility that Jagex as well as the Old School team are tackling this issue with determination is something that excites you even though it might require us to insist that you close down your personal website."
